Kim Tucker, South Africa

Created by: Hinde ten Berge

Kim works for the CSIR, Meraka Institute, as a researcher on ICT in Education. The term Meraka refers to an open area of land shared by communities, most commonly used for cattle grazing. Part of the institute's role is to contribute to the digital meraka - shared digital resources for the benefit of all. The Institute's Open Source Centre works with local and international partners and peer organisations to accelerate the adoption of FLOSS (free/libre and open source software).
Kim's work is mostly concerned with research on ICT in education though he has worked on projects relating to FLOSS skills and capacity building, and the impact of FLOSS. He promotes the concept of free/libre knowledge as the most effective way of addressing the knowledge divide, and enabling communities to empower themselves with knowledge (see Libre Communities).
