Localisation Track
Why Localisation is so cool?
Regarding generic localisation content, a session on Unicode and keeping/converting text or HTML to UTF-8 will be offered.
Africa has following scripts:
- Latin - some would require Unicode as they're not in any other charset.
- Some have own encoding which might not be in tools like iconv
- Arabic - some use Arabic script for writing
- Ethiopic - Used by a few language around that area
- And few others - would depend on if we have people who speak those
- languages
Number of activities will introduce participants to conversion and specifiying procedures.
Even for Latin-based written languages, having a Website configure for UTF-8, mail applications configure for UTF-8, database in UTF-8, are good as a future investment, as these documents will be accessible forever.
Facilitators will also tackle issues like: internationalisation eg
keyboards, locales, etc. Just imagine we will create an OpenOffice.org locale for every language and
country represented at AS2. (10 languages added to OpenOffice.org would be also great)
For those interested in the localisation of a sizeable application (Firefox, Thunderbird, OOo, etc), a session or two on Pootle and project management will be planned too.
Depending on interest, we will add the offline translation tools like poEdit and KBabel.
